Every fall, as leaves turn crisp and pumpkin spice takes over, there’s one familiar sight that signals spooky season is officially here: the bold black-and-orange sign of Spirit Halloween rising from the ashes of an abandoned big-box store.

From humble beginnings to becoming a billion-dollar seasonal empire, Spirit Halloween has carved its own niche in retail — and in Halloween lovers’ hearts. But how did it all start? Let’s take a walk through the foggy graveyard of retail history to uncover the origin of this iconic pop-up shop.
It All Started with a Costume Shop in California
Spirit Halloween was founded in 1983 by entrepreneur Joseph Marver in Castro Valley, California. At the time, Marver owned a women’s clothing store. Across the street, a costume shop was doing booming business in the weeks leading up to Halloween.
Recognizing an opportunity, Marver pivoted. He opened a temporary Halloween store in a local mall, dubbing it “Spirit Halloween.” The concept was simple but revolutionary: a seasonal, pop-up shop that capitalized on a short window of high demand. It was an instant success.

The Rise of the Pop-Up Empire
In the 1980s and ‘90s, pop-up retail wasn’t common. Spirit Halloween helped define the concept.
By 1999, Spirit had grown to about 60 stores. That same year, the company caught the eye of Spencer Gifts, the novelty retailer known for gag gifts and lava lamps. Spencer’s acquired Spirit Halloween, and things were never the same.
With Spencer’s backing, Spirit expanded rapidly. It started using empty storefronts — often in recently closed big-box stores like Toys “R” Us or Sears — to house its temporary locations. This gave Spirit a unique advantage: large spaces with low rent and built-in foot traffic.

Why Spirit Pops Up in Dead Malls
One of Spirit Halloween’s greatest strengths is its flexibility. The company leases short-term spaces — often in vacant or underused retail areas — and moves in fast. A Spirit store can be up and running in just a few weeks, often using the bones of the previous tenant to build its eerie atmosphere.
This model helps keep overhead low while creating urgency among shoppers. After all, once Halloween ends, the stores disappear — like ghosts.

Charitable Work
Spirit started the Spirit of Children program in 2006 to collect donations in its stores for children’s hospitals. Each year, the program celebrates Halloween at hospitals by providing costumes and decorations. Since 2007, it has raised more than $29 million.
Spirit Halloween Today
As of today, Spirit Halloween operates over 1,500 locations across the U.S. and Canada — all open for just a few months, typically from late August through early November. The company also runs a robust e-commerce site, which has become increasingly important in recent years.
During the pandemic, Spirit even adapted with safety measures and curbside pickup, proving it’s just as resilient as it is spooky.
From Meme to Mainstream
Spirit Halloween has become more than just a store — it’s a cultural phenomenon. It’s been parodied in memes (who hasn’t seen the fake costume label jokes?) and celebrated for its unique business model. In 2022, it even inspired a feature-length horror comedy film, Spirit Halloween: The Movie.
A Retail Ghost Story with a Happy Ending
While many retailers have struggled or shuttered in the age of online shopping, Spirit Halloween thrives. It’s a rare example of a business that embraces its niche — and its seasonality — to full effect.
So the next time you see that familiar Spirit Halloween banner hanging on an abandoned storefront, remember: it’s not just a costume shop. It’s a legacy, a tradition, and a testament to spooky entrepreneurship.
